SnapGPT User Guide

Everything you need to start getting answers in seconds

Welcome to SnapGPT

SnapGPT is a browser extension that uses AI to instantly answer questions on your screen. Take a screenshot, highlight some text, or open the AI chat — and get the help you need right away.

Here's what you can do

  • Screenshot any question — Click a button or press a shortcut and SnapGPT reads the question on your screen and gives you the answer
  • Select a specific area — Focus on just the part of the screen you want analyzed
  • Highlight text to analyze — Right-click on selected text to get answers without taking a screenshot
  • Chat with AI — Ask questions, get homework help, write essays, generate images, run code, and more
  • Create study flashcards — Let AI generate flashcard sets on any topic to help you study

SnapGPT works on Chrome and Firefox. The AI Chat also works in any browser at snapgpt.me/chat — no extension needed.

Install & Set Up

Step 1: Add the Extension

Pick your browser and click the link to install:

Click Add to Chrome (or Add to Firefox) and confirm. The SnapGPT icon will appear in your browser toolbar.

Can't see the icon? Click the puzzle piece icon (Extensions menu) in the top-right corner of your browser. Find SnapGPT in the list and click the pin icon so it's always visible in your toolbar.

Step 2: Create Your Account

  1. Click the SnapGPT icon in your toolbar to open the popup.
  2. Click Sign Up and enter your email and a password.
  3. Check your email for a verification link and click it.
  4. Go back to the popup, sign in, and you're all set.

Heads up: You need to verify your email before SnapGPT will work. If the email doesn't show up, check your spam folder or click Resend Verification Email in the popup.

Your Account Dashboard

Click your profile icon in the popup to see how many requests you have left today and when your quota resets. You can also click Manage Account to visit your full dashboard at snapgpt.me/dashboard.

Video Tutorial

Want to see it in action? This quick walkthrough covers installation, taking screenshots, and all the key features.

Taking Screenshots

There are two ways to capture what's on your screen. Both send the image to AI for analysis and give you an answer in seconds.

Full Page Screenshot

This captures everything visible on your screen. Use it when the question is the main thing showing.

  • Click the floating button — it's the camera button in the bottom-left corner of any page
  • Or press Alt + Shift + X (Mac: Option + Shift + X)

The button spins while it's working. Your answer pops up on screen a few seconds later.

Area Selection

This lets you draw a box around just the part of the screen you want to analyze. Great when there are multiple questions on the page or you want to zoom in on one area.

  1. Hold Shift and click the floating button.
  2. A dark overlay appears. Click and drag to draw a rectangle around the area you want.
  3. Let go, and SnapGPT analyzes just that region.

Force SmartScan

Want to skip the automatic question detection and go straight to a full streamed response? Hold Cmd (Mac) or Ctrl (Windows) while clicking the floating button.

This forces the streaming response window to pop up immediately — SnapGPT won't try to detect whether the content is a free-response question or multiple-choice first. It works even when Smart Scan is turned off in your settings.

How it works

Demo of Force SmartScan — hold Cmd/Ctrl and click the ScreenSnap button
  • Hold Cmd (Mac) or Ctrl (Windows) and click the floating ScreenSnap button
  • The streaming window opens right away with a full AI-generated response
  • No need to have Smart Scan enabled — this shortcut bypasses that setting

Tip: Press Esc at any time to cancel and start over.

Getting the best results

  • Make sure the question and all answer choices are clearly visible
  • For multiple choice, include all the options (A, B, C, D, etc.)
  • Use area selection on busy pages so SnapGPT focuses on the right question
  • Make sure text isn't blurry or cut off at the edges

Multi-Screenshot Mode

Sometimes a question is too long to fit on one screen. Multi-screenshot mode lets you capture up to 3 screenshots and send them all together so the AI can see the full question.

How it works

Demo of multi-screenshot mode — capture multiple screenshots and send them together
  1. Hold Option (Mac) or Alt (Windows/Linux) and click the floating button to capture your first screenshot. A small preview card appears above the button.
  2. Scroll to the next part of the question, then Option/Alt + Click again to capture another screenshot. The preview cards fan out so you can see what you've collected.
  3. Repeat up to 3 screenshots total.
  4. When you're ready, click the button normally (without holding any keys) to send all your screenshots to the AI at once.

The AI looks at all your screenshots together and gives you one combined answer. A small tooltip next to the button reminds you to click to send your question. You can remove any screenshot by clicking the × on its preview card.

Tip: The button glows red while you're holding Option/Alt, so you know you're in multi-screenshot mode.

Area Selection + Multi-Screenshot

You can combine area selection with multi-screenshot mode to select specific regions and queue them up, rather than sending them immediately.

  1. Hold Option + Shift (Mac) or Alt + Shift (Windows/Linux) and click the floating button.
  2. Draw a rectangle around the area you want to capture.
  3. The cropped region is added to your multi-screenshot queue (you'll see a preview card appear).
  4. Repeat to queue more regions (up to 3 total — you can mix full-page and area captures).
  5. When ready, click the button normally to send all queued screenshots together.

Tip: When holding multiple modifier keys, the button's glow splits into multiple colors so you can see which modes are active.

How Answers Work

After you take a screenshot, SnapGPT figures out what kind of question it's looking at and responds accordingly.

Multiple-Choice Questions

SnapGPT shows the answer letter right away in a small popup — like B or A, C. Quick and to the point.

Written / Free-Response Questions

For questions that need a longer answer, SnapGPT streams the full response in real time inside a floating window. You'll see it type out word by word. When it's done, a "SmartScan Complete" message appears along with a Copy button so you can paste it wherever you need.

No Question Found

If SnapGPT can't find a clear question in what you captured, it shows a brief "no result" icon. Try using area selection to capture a more focused region, or make sure the text on screen is clear and readable.

Where do answers show up?

By default, answers appear at the bottom center of your screen. You can move this to any corner or edge — see Settings to customize the position and how long answers stay visible.

Analyzing Text

You don't always need a screenshot. If the question is plain text on the page, you can analyze it directly:

  1. Highlight the text with your mouse.
  2. Right-click to open the menu.
  3. Click "Analyze with SnapGPT".

SnapGPT reads the selected text and gives you an answer the same way it does for screenshots. This is handy when you can select the question directly instead of taking a picture of it.

Getting Started with Chat

SnapGPT includes a full AI chatbot that's separate from the screenshot tool. Use it for homework help, writing, brainstorming, coding, or anything else you'd ask an AI.

How to open the chat

You have a few options:

  • Go to snapgpt.me/chat or sgpt.chat in any browser
  • Or open the SnapGPT popup, go to the Advanced tab, and click "Open AI Chat"

You'll need to be signed in to your SnapGPT account. The chat works in any browser — you don't need the extension installed to use it.

Picking an AI model

Click the model name at the bottom of the chat input to switch between models:

Available models

Claude Sonnet 4.6 Anthropic's model. Fast, accurate, and the default choice.
GPT-5.4 OpenAI's flagship model. Great for creative and general tasks.
SnapGPT 1.0 Uncensored SnapGPT's own model, built on Gemma. Completely unfiltered with zero content restrictions. Slower with a lower context limit, and web search isn't available with this model.

You can switch models at any time, even mid-conversation. Your choice is remembered between sessions.

Chat Features

The AI Chat has a lot of built-in tools to help you get the most out of your conversations.

Extended Thinking

For harder questions, turn on Extended Thinking in the model selector. The AI takes extra time to reason through the problem step by step before answering. You'll see a "Thought for X seconds" note that you can expand to read the AI's thought process. Works with any model.

Web Search

Need up-to-date information? Click the + button next to the text input and toggle Web Search on. The AI can search the web while answering, which is great for current events, recent data, or anything that changes over time. Available with Claude Sonnet 4.6 and GPT-5.4.

Upload Images

You can send images to the AI for analysis or explanation. There are three ways to attach them:

  • Click the + button and choose Upload File
  • Drag and drop an image into the chat window
  • Paste an image from your clipboard (Ctrl+V / Cmd+V)

You can attach up to 10 images at once. Previews appear above the text input — click the X to remove any.

Code Execution

When you ask the AI to write or run code, it can actually execute it and show you the results. Great for math, data analysis, charts, or testing code snippets — the AI runs the code for you right in the chat.

Image Generation

Ask the AI to create, draw, or generate an image and it'll produce one directly in the chat. Click on any generated image to view it full-size.

Managing conversations

Your chat history

  • All conversations are saved automatically in the sidebar, organized by date
  • Search past chats using the search bar at the top of the sidebar
  • Delete a conversation with the trash icon (hold Shift to skip the confirmation)
  • Start fresh with the + New chat button

Editing & copying

  • Edit a message: Hover over any of your messages and click the pencil icon to rephrase and resend it
  • Copy a message: Hover over any message and click the copy button to grab the text
  • Code blocks have their own copy button so you can grab snippets easily

Rich formatting

AI responses support Markdown (headings, bold, lists, tables), syntax-highlighted code blocks, and LaTeX math for formulas and equations.

Daily limits

Free users get 5 chat messages per day. Plus users get unlimited messages. You can see how many you have left by clicking your profile at the bottom of the sidebar.

Flashcards & Study

Study Sets are AI-generated flashcard collections that help you learn and retain information. Tell the AI what you want to study, and it creates a set of flashcards for you.

Plus Exclusive

Study Sets are available for SnapGPT Plus subscribers. Upgrade to Plus to unlock them.

Creating a study set

  1. Go to snapgpt.me/study or click Study in the nav bar.
  2. Click "New Set".

  4. Click "Create" and give it a moment to generate your cards.

Tip: The more specific you are, the better the flashcards. Mention the topic, difficulty level, chapter, or course name for the most relevant results.

Studying your flashcards

Click on any study set to open the interactive flashcard viewer:

  • Click the card to flip between question and answer
  • Use the Previous / Next buttons to move through the deck

Subtle Mode

Subtle Mode is for when you want SnapGPT to be less noticeable on screen. It minimizes or hides the floating button and gives you extra options for how answers are displayed.

Turning it on

  1. Open the popup and go to the Appearance tab.
  2. Toggle on Subtle Mode.

This unlocks two extra options:

Transparent Button (Invisible Mode)

This makes the floating camera button completely invisible. It's still there and still works — you just can't see it.

How to use SnapGPT when the button is invisible

  • Keyboard shortcut (easiest): Press Alt + Shift + X (Mac: Option + Shift + X) for a full-page screenshot. Works whether the button is visible or not.
  • Click where the button is: It's still in the bottom-left corner of the page. Clicking that spot still triggers a capture.
  • Area select: Hold Shift and click the invisible button's location to start area selection.

Answer in URL Bar

Instead of showing a popup, the answer appears briefly in your browser's address bar — like https://yourpage.com#ans:B. It disappears automatically after your display time runs out. This is the most discreet way to see answers.

Keyboard Shortcuts

These shortcuts work anywhere the extension is active.

Shortcut What It Does
Alt + Shift + X Take a full-page screenshot (Windows / Linux)
Option + Shift + X Take a full-page screenshot (Mac)
